3D graphics software helps users create 3D graphics. The models created by 3D graphics software can be animated by 3D animation software. 3D graphics are three dimensional computer generated respresentations of objects.
3D graphics are composed of a series of lines and curves similar to vector graphics, but rather than being drawn on a flat two-dimensional canvas, 3D graphics is built in three dimensions, inside a virtual box instead of being laid down on a flat surface, like in vector graphics software. 3D graphics software isn't necessary to own but it would be nice to add to the collection.

Animation software is creation software that helps users create animation sequences and generate animated videos. Animation is a process in which a series of images is created in an ordered sequence so that the illusion of movement is perceived. 3D animation software creates image sequences using object models in perceived three dimensions whereas 2D animation software creates perceived two-dimensional images.
3D animation software was a natural evolution of 3D graphics software. 3D graphics were invented earlier. Manipulating these models, movement could be simulated and this led to 3D animation being developed. Animation software is not essential but it would be nice to have.
